Australian police investigating the disappearance of 22-year-old Sarah Cafferkey, whose grandfather is a native of Achill, have discovered female remains at a property 30 kilometres from Melbourne city centre.
Australian police are still awaiting autopsy results in order to confirm whether the remains are those of Ms Cafferkey.
Sarah, a granddaughter of John Cafferkey, who emigrated from the Cashel area in Achill 40 years ago, was reported missing by her mother Noelle Dickson, on November 12 last.
Investigating police are reported to have made the discovery at a property in Point Cook in Melbourne’s southwest, 50 kilometres from Sarah’s home. Forensic detectives were continuing to examine the house yesterday (Monday).
Sarah’s grandfather, now aged in his 80s and living in Queensland, where Sarah’s father, Adrian, also lives, first emigrated to England before emigrating to Australia. He regularly returned to Achill when he could, and was last home 17 years ago.
Adrian’s first cousin, James Cafferkey from Cashel, told The Mayo News that he was ‘shocked to hear the news of Sarah’s disappearance’ and that his thoughts and prayers were with Adrian and the family.
“We were all shocked when we heard the news and we were hoping that Sarah would be found safe and sound. We thought that when they found her car, she might be found, but it was not to be.
“You hear about these things but never expect something like this to happen to your own family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Adrian and all the family in Australia on their tragic loss,” said James, who went on to thank all the people in Achill who have called and sympathised with him.
