JAMES Horan was officially offered a two-year extension as Mayo senior football manager at Monday night’s County Board meeting. Board chairman Paddy McNicholas told club delegates at McHale Park, Castlebar that he and secretary Kevin O’Toole met with Horan last week. The Board’s Executive offered the Ballintubber man a further two years in addition to the 12 months that still have to run on his original three-year term, keeping him in the position until 2015. That recommendation went before delegates on Monday night and was formally proposed, seconded and ratified on a show of hands. No voices were raised in dissent and the decision took only a very short part of a 90-minute meeting. Elsewhere, there will be a contest for both the Mayo minor and under-21 manager’s positions. Outgoing Mayo minor boss Tony Duffy (Ballintubber) has been nominated for the under-21 job, as has Stephen Rochford (Crossmolina). At minor level, Enda Gilvarry (Killala), one of Duffy’s selectors this year, has expressed interest in the manager’s job, as has a joint ticket made up of departing Mayo junior bosses John Kelly (Moy Davitts) and Vincent Gavin (Swinford). Interviews are expected to take place next weekend. Christy Phillips and Kieran Hynes have been nominated jointly for the position of Mayo senior hurling manager. Read a full account of the meeting – in which issues like All-Ireland tickets, fixtures and finance were discussed – in next week’s edition of The Mayo News.
