Promenade to ‘transform’ Mulranny

The development of a promenade through the centre of Mulranny village  which will ‘transform’ the village is one of the exciting proposals in the Mulranny Village Design Statement.
The promenade which is to be located along the south side of the Village’s centre will consist of a picnic area, public seating, trees, car parking as well as the existing petrol pumps. The ‘wide tree-lined paved promenade’ will overlook the sea providing visitors and locals alike with the amenities to enjoy the sea views on offer.
The proposal for the promenade is part of the Mulranny Village Design Statement which was launched last week by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. The statement was prepared and designed by the heritage department of Mayo County Council following a consultation process with the local community.
SeΡn Carolan, the PRO of Mulranny Community Futures Group said the statement was welcomed overwhelmingly by the community and believes what is proposed on paper can be delievered.
“The promenade along the south side of the village centre is a fantastic proposal which will make space for people to enjoy the views and transform Mulranny,” he said.
The main problems facing the village was the deficit of footpaths and parking and the statement is designed to provide these facilities. Other proposals include a footpath connection from the village to the Causeway walk, landscaping and traffic calming measures.
Deirdre Cunningham, Mayo Heritage Officer with Mayo County Council said the village will become ‘more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly, while retaining a strong sense of place’.
“The Design Statement recognises the important role of the Mulranny community in determining the future for their village,” she said at the launch.
Launching the document,Enda Kenny praised the initiative and ambition of the local community in promoting and protecting their rich and distinctive natural and built heritage.
