Body of man in his 60s discovered near summit of Holy Mountain by group of climbers

GARDAÍ in Westport are this evening trying to establish the identity of the body of an elderly man which was found near the summit of Croagh Patrick at midday today (Friday).
The man, believed to be in his 60s, was found by a group of climbers and it is believed he may have been dead for more than a couple of hours.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed to The Mayo News that efforts were ongoing to try and identify the man. Identification found on his person has revealed his name, and the Gardaí are hopeful that the full process of formal identification will be complete by this evening.
The man’s motor vehicle has been located in the Murrisk area, although it was not parked in the designated car park at the foot of the Holy Mountain.
The Garda spokesperson also revealed that the death is not being treated in anyway suspicious. The nature of the man’s injuries have not yet been formally revealed, but it is believed that he may have sustained a broken leg while nearing the summit on Thursday and been unable to descend the mountain, and that he may have perished overnight.
Gardaí are this evening continuing their investigation into the man’s death. Anyone who climbed the mountain on Thursday or Friday and may have information is asked to contact the Gardaí in Westport on 098 50320.
