THE Mayo senior football squad will begin the build-up to the Connacht SFC Final against Roscommon in earnest tonight (Tuesday).
Five members of the panel didn’t start for their clubs in the county senior championship last weekend but all of them should be back on the training field later this week.
Both Andy Moran (knee) and Trevor Mortimer (quad muscle) began their club’s games on the sidelines last Sunday due to slight injuries but they were both introduced in the closing stages and came through unscathed.
Meanwhile, Mayo captain Alan Dillon was unable to take his place in the Ballintubber starting line-up after he was struck on the back of the head by a stray football during the warm-up before the county champions’ meeting with Garrymore.
Dillon was left dazed after the freak accident and deemed unfit to start the game. However, he was introduced during the second half and scored a crucial point.
Elsewhere, Castlebar’s Neil Douglas and Knockmore’s Trevor Howley played no part in their  team’s respective outings.
Douglas, who has been struggling with a hamstring problem in recent months, did train with the Mayo squad last Tuesday and is expected to return to action again this week.
Howley, who damaged his knee in the first round of the club championship last month, is also hoping to return to county training before next weekend.
Mayo manager James Horan will also be awaiting a fitness update on Ronan McGarrity tonight.
The Ballina midfielder left the field five minutes before the end of his club game on Saturday evening before applying ice to his achilles tendon.
Meanwhile, the return of Conor Mortimer to competitive action for Shrule/Glencorrib last Sunday will also give the Mayo management team some food for thought this week.
The 28 years-old played for the last ten minutes and scored two points from frees.
