Pat Jennings to open Achill Yawl Sailing Festival 2011
MAYO Person of the Year Mr. Pat Jennings will officially open the 17th Annual Cruinniu Badoiri Acla Yawl Sailing Festival this Saturday at Tonragee Pier Achill at 6.15pm sharp. The blessing of the assembled yawls will be performed immediately afterwards. The first race in the yawl sailing calendar, the Bernard Murphy Memorial Cup, sponsored by John and Rita and Bernard Murphy of the Way Inn Pub in Tonragee, Achill, will start at 7pm. Yawl racing is a fast exciting sport which is very spectator-friendly. An exciting race is guaranteed at Tonragee this Saturday. In fact Tonragee means ‘back to the wind’, and Tonragee invariably lives up to its windy reputation. A presentation function will be held this Saturday night in the Way Inn Pub, Tonragee where the trophy will be presented to the winning yawl. The Patrick McLoughlin Memorial Cup will be held on Sunday at 7pm at Achill Sound with the presentation function in McLoughlin’s Pub that night. The yawl races continue over the summer months. Yawl racing venues include Achill Sound, Clare Island, Curraun, Derreens, Inishbiggle, and Mulranny. The Annual Yawl Ball will be held in Achill Sound on September 24. Full details of racing calendar can be found on www.achillyawl.com.
