Two Mayo buildings are among the 38 architecture projects on the shortlist for this year’s Irish Architecture Awards. The Kilmeena Village in Kilmeena, Westport and the ‘Edge of Town’ Mayo County Council building in Claremorris are shortlisted for their architectural excellence along with projects like the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The winners will be announced on July 11 next. The Kilmeena Village was designed by Westport based Cox Power Architects. Houses in the project are traditional in form but modern in detail and the judging committee describe it as being ‘a focal point for the community and essentially represents a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Irish settlement’. Meanwhile the ‘Edge of Town’ building in Claremorris, which houses the local offices of Mayo County Council, was designed by Simon J Kelly and Partners Architects, based in Westport and Galway. The judges described the building as having a ‘confident civic presence and architecture in motion in the town of Claremorris’. A total of 134 entries were received across 15 categories including emerging practice, public building, health and leisure. The winners will be announced and presented with their awards on the evening of Monday, July 11 in Wood Quay, Christ Church in Dublin. Members of the public are invited to choose their favourite building from the shortlist in the Public Choice Award category by voting online at www.irisharchitectureawards.ie.
