SHRULE/GLENCORRIB’S Mark Ronaldson has rejoined the Mayo senior football squad as they prepare for their Connacht SFC semi-final against Galway on June 26.
The 24 years-old was released from the county panel at the end of the Allianz League in April but has been recalled after a series of impressive displays for his club last month.
Ronaldson also lined out in a challenge game for Mayo against Donegal last Thursday evening in Sligo and impressed James Horan sufficiently to be included in his plans for the McHale Park showdown in three weeks time.
Aghamore’s Cathal Freeman also featured in last week’s high-scoring challenge match.
The entire Mayo squad spent most of last weekend in Castlebar at a training camp as they reflected on their recent adventures in London, and planned ahead for the visit of Galway.
“People just wanted to get back out on the field again and get back to work,” James Horan told The Mayo News last night.
“We trained on Tuesday, played Donegal on Thursday, and got together on Friday and Saturday as well so we got a lot of good work done.
”The lads put in a completely different performance against Donegal than they had in London,” he added. “It was a tight, hard game and a good work-out.
“The lads gave us a great response over the weekend too but we didn’t expect anything less from them.”
Mayo will not train collectively again until next Tuesday, twelve days before they face Galway, as the players return to their clubs this week ahead of the first round of the Mayo club championship next weekend.
James Horan confirmed that Keith Higgins and Ronan McGarrity are both recovering from their injuries but that it was “too early” to say whether they would line out with their clubs next weekend.
“We will be watching a lot of the club championship matches next weekend and if anybody shows up well they could come into the reckoning,” he added. “People should be in good shape and the door is still open for guys playing well.”
