Scoil Phadraig in Westport could be getting a new 16 classroom school under the Department’s school building programme
New school in pipeline for Westport
Trevor Quinn
The TΡnaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, TD, had some positive news for four Mayo schools last week after it was announced that Scoil Phadraig in Westport would be getting a new sixteen classroom school under the Department’s school building programme for 2011. Principal of the school Mr Stiofan O Morain said: “We’re delighted. I’d just like to express our gratitude to the local town council and the public representatives that helped us to secure this.” Mr Ó Morain said he was particularly thankful to Cllr Margaret Adams and outgoing Fianna Fail TD Beverley Flynn for their support and assistance throughout the process. He saaid they received total cross-party support from the whole community and this support was very much appreciated. The numbers of students at Scoil Phadraic has been steadily increasing in recent years and the new school will be a massive boost to parents, children and staff in the Westport area. Other Mayo schools to benefit include extension and refurbishment works are St Brid’s School in Castlebar; Scoil Iosa, Ballyhaunis and Our Lady’s Secondary School in Belmullet. The proposed Scoil Iosa project is at the tender stage, while the Our Lady’s Secondary School and St Brid’s projects are at the tender documents stage.
