THERE was great interest in Killawalla at the recent launch of local book, ‘Killawalla at Home and Away’, which took place in the local Community Centre.
Chairperson of the editorial committee, Tom Tracey, welcomed those present and thanked all the editorial team, Peter Carter, Bernie Conway, Mary Gavin, Pauline Heraty, Mary O’Malley, Claire Malone, Ann Twohig, Caitriona Tracey and Michael Walsh, for all their help. He also paid tribute to Adrian Conway and Liam Tracey for their technical input into the magazine.
The chairperson went on to express his thanks to Killawalla Community Council for use of the hall, the pastoral council for use of the parochial house for the book meetings, Michael and Maureen Walsh for distribution and the catering team who provided the refreshments.
Thanks were also expressed to Martin Gibbons for preparing the hall for the special occasion, Peter Carter for supplying the photos for the cover of the book as well as supplying general photos, Louis Walsh for taking the photographs on the night and also for supplying numerous photos for the magazine.  On behalf of the editorial team, Mary Gavin spoke of the importance of a publication like this book in weaving together strands of our social history. She went on to say that the previous Killawalla publications are still a great source of reference in public libraries throughout the county.
Chairperson of Killawalla Community Council, Michael Lyons, paid glowing tributes to the book committee for producing such an interesting book.
Local Parish Priest, Fr Jack Garvey congratulated the book committee on their wonderful achievement and said that the previous community publications were a great source of social history for the locality.
The youngest contributor to the book, May Skolemestra, after reading her poem ‘Bedtime’ cut the ribbon to officially launch the book.
Treasurer of the Book committee, Michael Walsh made a presentation to May Skolemestra in appreciation of her launching the book.
The publication itself has in the region of ninety articles and 400 photographs both, black and white and colour. Its articles are a mix of contributions from young people on their experiences working overseas and stories from more senior citizens about their experiences in times past. Anyone who wishes to purchase the book or would like to have it posted to a family friend or relative can contact Michael Walsh, Killawalla Post Office 098 35113.
