SQUAD ROTATION
When a new bainisteoir is installed into the dugout, the first port of call is often to experiment with the squad in the National League, and for Ballaghaderreen’s finest, this was no different.
The hike in numbers bears fruit in the figures.
Last year, some 27 names pulled on the Green and Red jersey for Kevin McStay, Stephen Rochford, and company. One year on, and there has been a drastic hike.
In all, 36 players have crossed onto the battlefield, with 15 of those having not featured for Mayo in 2025.
Rob Hennelly, James Carr, Conor Loftus, and Cillian O’Connor returned to the fold after an absence, while a lot of faces coming into the panel were making their debuts, having performed prolifically at underage and club level.
Eoin McGreal (who was unfortunate to suffer an injury) and Darragh Beirne were in from the start on the first day out in Pearse Stadium.
Diarmuid Duffy and Seamus Howard made their bows in the second half of the Donegal game, while few will forget the magic of Kobe McDonald as he made Clones his playground.
Four men ran out for Mayo for the first time in the League against Roscommon.
Jack Livingstone and Hugh O’Loughlin showed well on their first start, while John MacMonagle and Kuba Callaghan came on in the closing exchanges.
Some of these players have had a solid impact in their maiden campaign. Beirne chipped in with 2-9 in four matches before clocking in with the Under-20s.
The aforementioned Mr McDonald showed his potential pedigree against Monaghan.
