NFL Division Two
Mayo 2-14
Monaghan 0-9
In Castlebar
Diane O’Hora’s Mayo side finished their league campaign with a fine win over Monaghan on the pristine MacHale Park surface. Coming into the clash, Mayo needed to win while also needing Wexford to get a result in Letterkenny against a fancied Donegal side. Unfortunately for Mayo, Donegal overcame Wexford in comfortable fashion resulting in the Green and Red narrowly missing out on promotion.
Played in windy conditions, Mayo led 0-9 points to Monaghan’s 0-6 at the break. The hosts were dealt a massive blow when Danielle Caldwell was forced off early on, as it looked like the Castlebar Mitchels player picked up a knee injury.
Across the afternoon, Aoife Staunton stood out as she kicked 1-4 while Sinead Walsh and Lisa Cafferky also impressed in attack.
The Green and Red were dealt a further blow in the second half when Lucy Wallace was forced off with an injury. With the championship just around the corner, Diane O’Hora and co will be looking to have a fully fit squad to pick from, however the Mayo manager was overall pleased with her side’s victory as they ran out convincing winners over Monaghan.
A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
