Connacht PPS Senior D Championship Semi Final
St Tiernan’s College 1-13
Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiarain 1-10
In Bekan
In a hugely competitive game in a sunny but cool Bekan, it was Tony Carey who inspired St Tiernan’s College of Crossmolina to victory over a hard-working Carraroe side as the boys in purple advanced with Carey kicking 1-5 across the hour.
It was the Connemara students who had the wind advantage in the first half but truth be told, they were far too negative as Tiernan’s enjoyed plenty of possession. Ten minutes in, Conor Carey capitalised on a misplaced Carraroe kickout and as he made his way into the dangerzone, he squared the ball to his brother Tony who finished to the net.
Nip and tuck throughout, the Galway students grew into the game as Eoinín Ó Cualáin and Rian Ó Conaire started to cause problems up front. Entering the final moments of the half, Joe Griffin finished to the net with a superb finish as the Carraroe boys went in leading narrowly 1-5 to St Tiernan’s 1-4.
As the second half got underway, the side from the heartland of Galway’s Gaeltacht area started well as Ó Conaire and Kieran Mac Diarmada hit over quickfire points before their lead was stretched to four thanks to Conaill Ó Conghaile.
Needing encouragement, Tiernan’s got it through Dylan Lavelle as the physical centre forward kicked two impressive two pointers in back to back fashion.
As time went on, both sides were evenly matched but in the closing stages, the Mayo students found more as Tony and Conor Carey sealed the deal.
The Crossmolina based students now look forward to a Connacht Final where they will play the winners of St Brendan’s of Belmullet or Colaiste Chroi Mhuire of Spiddeal who play tomorrow (Thursday January 29).
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
