The hunt for the Greatest begins

Under the shadow of The Reek, The Mayo News kicked off their hunt for those most passionate for the
Green and Red in our ‘Mayo’s Greatest Supporter’ competition.

From the first day, we were inundated with overwhelming inboxes as we heard the great tales of those
who gave their all to row in behind their county’s heroes.

O’Shea’s milestone

Mayo may have been in red-hot Championship fare pretty early after their League Final loss to Kerry, but their performances in wins over Sligo and Leitrim left fans with many fears as Galway loomed in the Connacht final.

However, one of the county’s finest sons did reach a huge milestone in the last-four clash in Carrick-On- Shannon. Aidan O’Shea has served his county with pride and distinction, and it could be some time before someone makes 200 Mayo appearances again.

Merry Monk land Plate honours

On the biggest day in Ireland’s basketball calendar, a phenomenal third quarter paved the way for a
rousing comeback for Merry Monk to secure history in the BIDL Plate final.

Ronan O’Malley and the evergreen Ronan McGarrity were unplayable as they usurped Cavan Eagles to
create history in Tallaght.

Under-20s end Connacht drought

It was a sweltering day in Tuam Stadium, but Mayo refused to melt as they held off a resilient
Roscommon side and reach the sweet oasis of Connacht glory for the first time in seven years.

Peadar Gardiner’s troops may have been rocked by three goals in eight minutes, but they managed to
show a lion’s heart to clinch the trophy.
