Tourmakeady are off and running after fine win over Northern Gaels

Solid Tourmakeady display takes the wind out of Northern Gaels sails in well-contested championship opener

Tourmakeady turned in an impressive display on home soil on Saturday.

Sometimes goals decide matches, but on a sunny Saturday evening in Pairc Naomh Muire the opposite was the case.
Tourmakeady got their championship endeavours off to a winning start by holding Northern Gaels goalless. In the league campaign, the Lacken-Kilfian co-operation scored at least a goal in every match, but it was different on Saturday.
The Tourmakeady defence wouldn't allow a goal. Corner-back JB Heneghan snuffed out kick-passes for fun. The minor was all over his opponents. His partner in the full-back line Tomás Staunton stepped up in the second half, to take the wind out of the Northern Gaels sails.
The Gaeltacht men got a fresh injection by another minor: Luke Lydon was lording the high ball battle. It seemed, every kick out that went into his direction, inevitably ended up in his hands.
Lydon showed great strength and calmness for his young age. He also contributed four points, including a two-pointer from open play, which rounded off a man of the match performance.
Northern Gaels showed their potential at times, but their overall performance was too patchy. The team managed by Micheal Collins was forcing kick passes too much, with the likes of Heneghan and Staunton defusing those.
Northern Gael's Owen Loughney caught the eye with sensational long range points and also Niall McDonnell showed his quality and put in a good shift.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News
