THERE were smiles all round as the small band of Mayo supporters swarmed onto the field at Hawkfield near Newbridge on Saturday afternoon to celebrate their Division 3 league final win over Kildare. The scenes of jubilation and joy were there for all to see.

Team manager, Ray Larkin, said they were delighted with the outcome and had no hesitation in where to place much of the credit.

“The backs saved the day for us. They were immense during the first half when London were in full flow. The game could have got away from us if London had converted some of their many chances in the first half,” Larkin told The Mayo News.

“We were in a good position at the interval when just four points adrift and with the strong wind behind us in the second half.

“There was nothing easy out there today. We had to dig deep and work hard. I think our fitness at the end. It was a great display against a strong London team with a strong representation from Galway (Loughrea, Oranmore-Maree and Kilbecanty) and other hurling counties.

“We had a lovely celebration in Delaney’s Pub in Ballyhaunis on Saturday night and the place was buzzing. It was great to have the cup there and to see the lads enjoy a well-earned social occasion.”

Larkin also expressed the desire that the GAA will ensure that the lower divisions in the hurling leagues are treated with greater respect in future.

“We were not aware until Tuesday afternoon where the game would be played, and the same applied to the Louth and Fermanagh game in the Division 4 final,” Larkin said. “It would be great for teams to play the league finals in premier hurling grounds like Thurles or Kilkenny if Croke Park is not available.”

Mayo return to training this Tuesday evening ahead of their first round of the Nickey Rackard championship against Roscommon on the weekend after next at a Mayo venue.
