In Bekan

THE old adage that goals win games certainly rang true at a misty Bekan on this afternoon as three goals by Summerhill propelled the Sligo side into the Connacht semi-finals.

Summerhill showed their penchant for three-pointers two minutes in when Adam Feeney rustled the back of the net.

Ballinrobe suffered a further setback on 13 minutes when Summerhill’s Marc Clifford and the aforementioned Feeney combined to tee up Paul Flynn, whose crisp drive flew past Dylan Walsh.

Trailing 2-3 to 0-3, a resolute Ballinrobe - led by the dynamic Tom Lydon, who notched 11 points -  cut the deficit to three points after 23 minutes.

Summerhill led 2-8 to 0-9 at the break, but a resurgent Ballinrobe upped the tempo on the resumption and eventually made it a one-point game.

Summerhill’s Patrick Brady was red-carded on 46 minutes after picking up a black card on top of a previous yellow.

The momentum appeared to be with Ballinrobe, but Summerhill quenched their hopes when substitute Callum Lynch found the back of the net on 51 minutes.

The Robesiders tried their best to snatch a goal during a frantic finale. However, the Summerhill rearguard remained watertight and held on to reach the knock-out stages and knock Ballinrobe out of the championship.
