ST Colman’s College overcame a four-point second-half deficit to beat Ballinrobe Community School in their first provincial championship group game this afternoon.

The concession of a black card and a goal in the last ten minutes was Ballinrobe’s undoing as St Colman’s ground their way to victory in an evenly-matched contest.

A fine display from Darragh Beirne, who shot 1-4, was the highlight of their winners’ display.

However, the former Mayo Minor had little possession for long periods as the two sides went to war between the two 45s, resulting in a low-scoring first half that finished 0-4 to 0-3 in Ballinrobe’s favour.

As former Mayo teammates Tom Lydon and Rio Mortimer duelled behind the 20-metre line, Ballinrobe began the second half with a bang when corner-back Caoimhin Donnelly crashed in a goal.

However, Colman’s were back in contention within minutes when Darragh Beirne danced through the opposing defence to finish a goal that made it a one-point game.

The game ebbed and flowed until Ballinrobe full-back Daithi Butler got black-carded and Colman’s corner-forward Seán O’Connell buried their second goal in the 52nd minute.

The teams swapped two points each before John Glavey’s full-time whistle handed St Colman’s a hard-fought win over their local rivals.

A full report plus reaction from both teams will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
