BALLINROBE Community School are awaiting official confirmation that they have broken a world record after 568 people took part in a gargantuan Gaelic football game on the school’s grounds.
If officially confirmed, the school will have set a Guinness World Record for the largest number of people to take part in a continuous game of football.
If successful, they will have eclipsed the existing record of 399 after hundreds of men, women, boys and girls played in 10-minute shifts on the school’s pitch.
Approximately 350 Ballinrobe Community School students took part, as well as roughly 100 primary school students.
Mayo senior team assistant manager Stephen Rochford and Mayo star Tommy Conroy also took part in the mega football match.
Ballinrobe Community School are currently fundraising to build a state-of-the-art fitness gym which will be fully accessible to the public and local community groups.
Damien Egan, a teacher in the school and manager of the senior men’s Gaelic football team, told The Mayo News that the school must submit paperwork and videos to Guinness to verify the record.
The school are due to seek sponsorship and carry out further fundraising activities to fund the project.
