FIVE candidates have sought the nomination to run for Fine Gael in the five-seat Mayo constituency in the next general election.
Sitting TD Minister Alan Dillon, newly-elected councillor Alma Gallagher, Mayo County Council Cathaoirleach John O’Hara, unsuccessful local election candidate Keira Keogh and former TD and Senator Michelle Mulherin have put their names forward for the September 15 selection convention.
Minister Dillon had already submitted his nomination long before yesterday’s deadline - which had been extended by a week.
Keira Keogh is the only candidate from Westport and, should she be nominated to run, will seek to retain the seat held by Michael Ring since 1994.
Cllr Alma Gallagher was elected to Mayo County Council on the sixth county earlier this summer, retaining a seat held by Ballyhaunis-based county councillor John Cribbin since 1999.
Cllr John O’Hara topped the poll in the Ballina Local Electoral area, where he exceeded the quota on the first count in the June local elections.
He will be challenged for the nomination by North Mayo-based Michelle Mulherin, who unsuccessfully stood for Fine Gael in the 2020 general election. She served as a Senator between 2016 and 2020 after being nominated by former Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
