HISTORY has been made after Fine Gael's Alma Gallagher became the first woman ever to be elected in the Claremorris Municipal District Area.
Cllr Gallagher, who works with Clár IRD in Claremorris, was elected on the sixth count in the early hours of this morning.
As expected, the Ballyhaunis women received a large transfer from the eliminated Ballyhaunis-based Fianna Fáil candidate Stephen Nolan, pushing her 361 votes ahead to 2,038, exceeding the quota of 1,954.
Cllr Gallagher has retained the seat for Fine Gael held by retiring county councillor John Cribbin since 1999.
