O'Malley and Mulroy edge out Hyland in battle for final Westport seats

Independent councillor Christy Hyland loses council seat

John O'Malley and Brendan Mulroy were both elected in Westport Electoral Area

John O'Malley and Brendan Mulroy celebrate after their election

Sitting councillors Brendan Mulroy (FF) and Independent John O'Malley retained their seats on Mayo County Council at the expense of Independent Christy Hyland.

The fifth count in the Westport Electoral Area saw O'Malley and Mulroy stay ahead of Hyland following the distribution of Peter Flynn's surplus of 391 votes.

Hyland entered the fifth count 49 votes behind Mulroy and any chances of him making up the deficit evaporated following the distribution of Flynn's surplus with Mulroy receiving one more vote.

O'Malley ended five votes ahead of Mulroy with 1,797 votes while Hyland ended 50 votes behind Mulroy.

As a result, Hyland was eliminated and Mulroy and O'Malley were deemed elected without reaching the quota.

They will now join Independent Ireland candidate Chris Maxwell and Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn as the four councillors from the Westport Electoral Area on Mayo County Council.
