Hopes of a high turnout across the county as voting takes place in the local and European elections until 10pm tonight

Voting begins in 235 polling stations across Mayo

Voting begun in polling stations around Mayo at 7am this morning.

After weeks and months of anticipation, the day of reckoning has finally arrived and voting in the local and European has begun since 7am this morning.

There are a total of 235 polling station across the county of Mayo and while early polling is expected to be slow, it is anticipated that from lunchtime on, polling clerks and returning officers in all area will see a large footfall.

Both Castlebar and Claremorris Local Electoral Area (LEAs) have the most polling stations, with 47 each; followed by Ballina with 41. Belmullet is next with 41, followed by Swinford with 31 and Westport has the least polling stations with 30.
