Marion Gordon does not have a normal campaign. She lives in Kildare but hailing originally from Bohola, Gordon is standing in her parents' electoral area of Swinford. The long distance does not bother the candidate running as an Independent under the banner of 'The Irish People' party. She is not concerned about the lack of comprehensive canvassing opportunities: “I am down in Mayo every week but I feel you don't want to be knocking on people's doors too much.”
The party 'The Irish People' was created last year. On its website one of the core principles is described as 'prioritizing Housing for Irish citizens' and a graphic reads 'welcome world. Goodbye Ireland'. Asked about what that means, Gordon quotes the controversial former Irish Times and Irish Independent columnist John Waters: “We are meeting our Replacements at the airport.”
Gordon claims that “our culture is going, our religion is going, our Irishness is going.”
She sees housing as a central issue that needs to be addressed. “If I get elected, I'd love to go out and find out who is on the housing list, who owns the houses, what funding was received and where is the money going.”
Gordon's approach to dealing with migration: “We want sensible immigration, not open borders. We would be empty without immigrants. They came in the past, working, paying taxes but that is not really the case anymore.”
She alleges “in the last couple of years we were prevented from meeting up. People would call us 'racist'. With the new platform, The Irish People party, now we can get the message out.”
She says, that representatives are needed, that “genuinely represent the people. We need accountability, transparency. We had it really good in the 1970s and 1980s and now it has catapulted into chaos.”
She claims there is an awful lot of corruption going on. Quizzed numerous on times on how to actually solving the housing crisis, transparent answers from Marion Gordon are hard to come by: She mentions that more mobile housing and log cabins should be facilitated” but emphasizing “I don't have all the answers.”
