Joe Faughnan from Knockmore has announced his candidacy for the local election in the Ballina area. The 33-year-old is running as an Independent describing himself as a realist:

“As an Independent Councillor I don’t plan to lean party wise, instead choosing to look at every situation with an open mind.”

As a good example for a local politician in general, Faughnan quotes the current Fine Gael TD Michael Ring: “He has set the bar really high for people in his area, he is so popular for what he has done: He helped create a town that so many people wanted to live in, the amenities in the town are the best in the region and he has helped with so many facilities for local communities.”

Faughnan wants to bring similar change to the North of Mayo. One topic he wants to prioritise is improving the ambulance services in the area. “There is so much waiting time on ambulances: I have heard about people waiting for an hour and a half on a sports pitch with an injury. The area is under-serviced. If I get elected for the Mayo County Council, I’ll tackle the issue.”

"Maybe say closer to home, Seamus Weir has achieved so much in his 25 years as a Councillor and I'm hoping to keep that legacy going in the local area."

The Knockmore man is heavily involved in the local sports community. He wants to help improve sports facilities in the North of Mayo as well:

“Sporting facilities give people a chance to go outside, it’s good for fitness, good for mental health, it’s also good for the community to come together.”

“I bring a lot of energy to local politics, a different outlook on things, many young people are looking for change. I’ll be hoping to bring that to the County Council.”
