Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has reaffirmed his commitment to progressing the R315 Castlehill road upgrade between Lahardane and Crossmolina, following a detailed update on outstanding work and its anticipated completion.

“People who travel this road every day want to know when it will be improved. I understand that frustration. I have been asking specific questions about progress, what is holding up the next stage and what funding is needed,” Minister Dillon said.

The approximately two-kilometre scheme includes road widening, active travel facilities and a new river crossing. Consultants appointed in late 2025 are progressing the design and environmental assessments, with geometric design approximately 90 percent complete.

The remaining work includes finalising the design, completing seasonal ecological surveys and preparing the Natura Impact Statement and planning documents. These are targeted for completion during 2026, ahead of a planning submission in the first quarter of 2027.

Approvals and procurement are expected to progress during 2027, with construction envisaged to begin in 2028, subject to planning, land acquisition and funding. A completion date has not yet been confirmed.

“I will continue following up with Mayo County Council’s roads design team and pursuing available funding through the Department of Transport. I want the preparatory work kept on schedule and the necessary decisions made promptly at each stage.

“I am also seeking an assessment of practical safety improvements that could be carried out while residents await the full upgrade. I will continue to keep asking the questions, pressing for funding and updating the community as this progresses. Getting this road improved for Lahardane, Crossmolina and everyone who uses it remains a priority for me.”
