Michael Higgins (pictured below) from Knocknakell, Mayo Abbey, who died suddenly in February 2025, was in his mid-50s. He was a hugely respected member of the staff at the Botanic Gardens in Dublin where his knowledge and expertise was valued and sought after by so many people. He was regarded as an outstanding plantsman and propagator and a stalwart of the National Botanic Gardens for many years.
Dr Matthew Jebb, the Director of the National Botanic Gardens, speaking at a recent ceremony to honour Michael at the Gardens, said friends and family had gathered to remember the Mayo man for his tremendous work over three decades.
“We are here today to remember Michael who was an extraordinary horticulturist who loved this work. What a pleasure it is to work in a garden. Michael worked in many parts of the gardens here. He was a regular in my office every morning 20 years ago. Back in 2004, we arranged an exchange year where Michael went to Sydney in Australia for a year. It was a very happy time for him.
“Plants gave him such pleasure in life. He would light up when chatting about growing alpines and he became the secretary of the Alpine Society. He had a very infectious laugh and was tremendously good company.
“It is very unusual that we plant trees for members of staff here at the Botanic Gardens. But Michael was special. His passing came as a shock to all of us back in February (2025). Grieving is a long process but it is nice to have a site to walk past and remember Michael. It will mean a lot to you and all of us and celebrate the 30 years of tremendous and diligent work he gave to us.”
Dr Jebb presided at the planting of a Chinese crab apple which he described as a ‘striking plant’ and one that will have a special place in the hearts of all who knew and respected Michael so well.
His sisters Mary and Breege, together with friends and staff from the Botanic Gardens attended the tree tree-planting ceremony. His father, Joe, died in the kind care of the staff at the Mayo Hospice in Castlebar two weeks ago.
