Nellie Quinn (née Staunton), Ballygowan, Claremorris (RIP) was a teacher in Facefield National School

Nellie Quinn (née Staunton), Ballygowan, Claremorris, who died peacefully at the Mayo Hospice in Castlebar, was a member of a well-known and highly regarded family in the parish of Claremorris.

Her husband, Joe, who died in December 2015, was active in many aspects of the life of Claremorris parish and was closely associated with Claremorris Athletic Club and the development of the track facilities down at the Racecourse over the years.

Nellie was a member of the teaching profession and spent over 30 years in Facefield NS where she taught many boys and girls from that region during three decades and more.

Several warm tributes have been paid to Nellie since her passing.

Aidan and Norah Brennan, Claremorris, commented: “A lovely lady is gone from us but the memory of her warmth and kindness will long be remembered as will her contribution to the development of the town and community of Claremorris.”

Ger Rynne, Ballincollig (Cork) and formerly of Claremorris, said Nellie was such a formidable lady and renowned educator and will be dearly missed.

Con and Carmel Nolan were among the many joining in the tributes.

“Nellie was a lady and a staunch pioneer and was a regular on the pioneer tours down through the years along with her late husband Joe.”

Reposing was in Gilligan’s Funeral Home with removal to St Colman’s Church. Interment took place in Claremorris cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Peter Gannon, PP.

Nellie, who was predeceased by her husband Joe, her brothers Paddy (Claremorris), Jimmy (Loughrea) and Liam (Athlone), and her son-in-law Richard Wynne (Castlebar), will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her sons Tom and James and daughters Bríd, Regina, Áine and Noreen, sons-in-law Sean Donoghue (Parke) and Mike Harte (Clare), daughter-in-law Laura (Claremorris), sister-in-law Anne (Loughrea), grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family, neighbours and many friends.
