Castlebar set to improve cycling and walking links with new route proposals.

Residents of Castlebar are being invited to have their say on a major new active travel proposal, as Mayo County Council announces the opening of a non-statutory public consultation on the Castlebar Orbital Connect Route.

The proposed Orbital Connect Route is set to form the backbone of Castlebar’s Active Travel Network, creating safer and more accessible walking and cycling links around the town.

The council said the project aims to improve connectivity between key residential areas, schools, workplaces and amenities, while encouraging more sustainable transport options.

To give the public an opportunity to learn more about the plans, a public information event will take place on Thursday, March 26, from 4pm to 7pm at the Lough Lannagh Leisure Centre.

In addition, an online public webinar will be held on Thursday, March 12, from 7pm to 8pm, allowing those unable to attend in person to engage with the project team and ask questions.

Mayo County Council is encouraging residents, businesses and community groups to review the proposals and make submissions or observations.

The consultation period will remain open until April 14.

The Orbital Connect Route is expected to play a central role in shaping the future of transport in Castlebar, with a focus on safer routes, reduced congestion and enhanced public spaces.

Further details on the proposed development, including how to make a submission, are available on the Mayo County Council website.
