Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is encouraging its alumni in Mayo and across the west of Ireland to register to vote in the Seanad Éireann university panel electorate ahead of the closing date of Thursday, February 26, 2026.

Graduates of ATU who hold a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, are Irish citizens and aged 18 or over are eligible to register and take part in electing members of Seanad Éireann, Ireland’s upper house of parliament. This includes thousands of alumni from former institutions such as GMIT, IT Sligo, LYIT and St Angela’s College.

By registering and voting, ATU graduates can help decide which voices will look into legislation, propose amendments and influence national debates on key issues such as regional development, education, healthcare, enterprise, culture and community life — areas of particular importance to rural and western regions.

Seanad Éireann consists of 60 members drawn from political, vocational, professional and academic backgrounds. Six of these seats are reserved for graduates of designated Irish universities, giving higher education alumni a direct role in shaping national law-making and policy oversight.

ATU President Dr Orla Flynn said the inclusion of technological universities in the Seanad electorate is a significant step for regional representation.

“The inclusion of technological universities as designated universities for Seanad Éireann voting rights is an important recognition of our role and contribution to society,” she said. “By registering, ATU graduates can bring the voice of our regions, our industries and our communities directly into national policy and decision-making. We strongly encourage all eligible alumni to participate and use their vote.”

Thousands of ATU graduates from Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Donegal and beyond are entitled to register and vote, ensuring the perspectives of the west and northwest are represented at the heart of government.

Registration is straightforward and can be completed online at SeanadVoter.ie, with paper application forms also available.
