A MAYO councillor has welcomed the awarding of a trade licence for the operation of a coffee dock at Lough Lannagh following a campaign by local councillors.

Last September, Castlebar councillors updated the casual trading bye-laws for Castlebar which included a new trading area at the Lough Lannagh car park. The bye-laws were adopted after councillors had complained that the old bye-laws had prevented anyone from setting up a coffee dock at the location which is popular with walkers.

Fine Gael councillor Ger Derre who was one of the councillors to call for the change in bye-laws welcomed news that a trading licence has now been awarded for the operation of a coffee dock at Lough Lannagh.

“I have campaigned for a number of years to see this facility located at the lake and following the introduction of the new trading bye-laws adopted by Castlebar members last year, a suitable area was identified and developed.

“This will be a great addition to a wonderful amenity already enjoyed by hundreds of people every day.

“I want to wish the new coffee dock operator every success and encourage everyone to support this fantastic addition to the lakeside. I'm very much looking forward to enjoying a coffee there in the coming weeks,” he said.

Cllr Derre added that Lough Lannagh has become increasingly popular for water activities in recent years and welcomed confirmation of funding for the installation of outdoor showers and lockers and discussions are progressing with providers interested in operating saunas in the area.

The Castlebar-based councillor also welcomed a commitment for a water station to be installed at Lough Lannagh and that the second phase of the skate park will commence in the coming months.
