Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has warmly welcomed the significant progress now underway on the new Order of Malta base in Castlebar, a project he has championed from the outset. Minister Dillon said he was “delighted to see that works have begun on the new two-storey building on Pavilion Road, which will link into the existing ambulance bay.” He noted that the overall investment in the development is expected to total €580,000.
The project received a major boost last year when €474,000 was secured under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, funding that Minister Dillon helped deliver alongside former Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys. Dillon highlighted this as a key moment that enabled the project to move forward.
He further noted: “It is great mayo to see construction now underway by Buildecon Ltd, with works set to continue for the next 12 months.”
The new building will provide a modern training facility, an upgraded ambulance base, and an expanded community hub, enhancing the capacity of the Castlebar Order of Malta’s 40 members and 25 cadets.
Minister Dillon credited the volunteers for their long-standing dedication, acknowledging the contributions of Tom Jennings, Liam McHugh, Cathal O’Boyle, Donal Geraghty, and all members working with Mayo County Council to bring the project to completion.
He concluded by reaffirming his support: “the Order of Malta has served this community for over 80 years. I look forward to seeing this new building completed and supporting their vital work for generations to come.”
