Shannon Sweeney, Rasheed Momoh and Carlagh Peake to fight for a place in the National Elite Championship semi-finals.
Three boxers from Mayo have their quarter-finals at the National Elite Championship coming up tomorrow evening (Friday).
It's a crucial competition for amateur boxers as a top two finish ensures important funding.
Carlagh Peake from Ballyhaunis has made waves, winning a silver medal at the World Youth Championships in 2024. She followed that up by claiming gold at the BoxCub title in Manchester, and showed her class at an international event in Belfast.
In the 51kg flyweight category, Peake will face Niamh Early from Unit 3 BC, Kildare in her quarter-final tomorrow, from 6pm.
Intriguingly, Peake starts in the same weight category as fellow Mayo fighter Shannon Sweeney. The woman from St Anne's BC in Westport is pitted against Rachel Lawless from St Brigid's Edenderry.
The European gold medal winner from 2024 had a strong finish to the last year, winning bouts en-masse, claiming gold at a tournament in Croatia along the way.
Sweeney meets an opponent who has recently shown her quality. At the National Boxing finals in August, Lawless beat Carlagh Peake in the final, so Sweeney will be warned ahead of her quarter-final fight.
Both female Mayo participants, Sweeney and Peake might meet in the final, but on their way there they will face last year's finalists.
Especially Sweeney will have a big challenge on her hands with a possible semi-final bout against reigning flyweight Elite Champion and Paris Olympian Daina Moorehouse from Dublin.
Before that, both Mayo fighters have to win their quarter-finals, scheduled from 6pm tomorrow (Friday, January 9).

The third participant at the National Elite Championship from Mayo is Rasheed Momoh.
The boxer from Castlebar BC has to overcome the challenge of Nathan Ojo (Esker BC, Dublin) in the 85kg category.
Momoh reached the fight for gold at the aforementioned National Boxing finals but lost out to Sean Trant from Monkstown in the final.
The Elite Championships will take place in the National Stadium. Find tickets here.

The Elite Championships, Ireland’s premier amateur boxing tournament, was first hosted in 1922 at the Abbey Theatre Dublin after an earlier All-Ireland event in 1920, eventually finding a permanent home at the purpose-built National Stadium in 1939.
Double Olympian and multiple Commonwealth Games medalist, Michaela Walsh of Holy Family GG Belfast, holds the record for winning the most Elite titles, having won her 13th at the 2025 National Elite Championships.
