Mayo boxer to fight for gold medal at European U-23 Championships

Natalia Fasciszewska from Castlebar Boxing Club has made waves at the European U-23 Championships in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

The Mayo woman defeated Georgia's Khuraman Kausumova in the semi-final on Friday. 

"I had a team meeting with my coaches and we analysed everything about this girl," Fasciszewska said in an interview after her bout: "I knew what to expect coming into this fight. istuck to my game plan and felt sharp today."

Natalia boxes for gold on Saturday against Paris Olympics silver medalist at the 57kg weight, Poland's Julia Szeremeta.

Fasciszewska has shown great performances on the big stage in Budapest so far. And now she has only one fight left to secure an European gold medal.  

Natalia is expected in the ring at around 11.15am, Irish time, on Saturday morning.

5 of her team mates will be bestowed with bronze medals on Saturday, including 80+kg Cliona D’arcy. Cliona, a 2022 World Youth champion and multiple domestic champion, boxes out of Tobar Pheadair BC in Galway.

Also receiving medals are 48kg Tiffany Spencer (Jobstown BC, Dublin), 60kg Rebecca Kavanagh (Mulhuddart BC, Dublin), 65kg Ava Henry (Dublin Docklands) and 50kg Louis Rooney (Star BC, Belfast)

Fasciszewska is part of the Irish boxing team which departed on November 21 for the 2025 European U-23 Championships in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

The team includes boxers from nine different counties with Mayo having one representative. Team Ireland are among almost 300 boxers from 33 federations contesting for gold at this inaugural confederation level World Boxing U-23 championships.

Following the National U-23 Championships in August, the team’s preparations included a ten-week block of training at the High Performance Unit on the Sport Ireland campus, a three-day international Round Robin with an Ulster Select, England and Hungary, in October, a two-International series against India in November, and an U-23 versus Elites sparring series in the High Performance Unit in November.
