Sun to continue to shine on Mayo with Mediterranean temperatures

Temperatures exceed 18 degrees Celsius in Belmullet with high temperatures to continue across Mayo

Mayo will bask in glorious sunshine this weekend with temperatures expected to reach the high teens which will put the west of Ireland temperatures on par with parts of Spain and Portugal.

The west of Ireland has experienced Mediterranean temperatures over the last few days with the mercury reaching a high of 18.1 degrees Celsius in Belmullet on Tuesday.

The good news is the warm weather will continue over the weekend with Belmullet to be the warmest place with temperatures again expected to exceed 18 degrees Celsius tomorrow afternoon while high temperatures ranging from 15 to 17 degrees are forecasted for other parts of Mayo over the weekend.

April has started off an unseasonably very dry, mild and sunny month with Met Éireann revealing that the mean temperatures in the four weather stations in Mayo are above their Long-Term Average (LTA) for the time of year.

Belmullet is currently the warmest part of Mayo with a mean temperature of 12.5 degrees Celsius so far in April which is above the LTA of 9.2 degrees and above last year's mean of 9.6 degrees.

The dry and warm weather conditions are a consequence of a moderate to fresh easterly wind which is bringing Mediterranean style temperatures to the west of Ireland.

So far no rainfall has been recorded in any of the weather stations in Mayo in April while the amount of rainfall in the month of March was also well below the LTA.

Belmullet recorded as the driest place in March with 41.5mm falling compared to 91.8mm for the same month last year.

Elsewhere, just 41.7mm of rain fell in Claremorris compared to 124.3mm in 2024 while Knock Airport recorded 49.6mm of rain and the Newport Furnace weather station was the wettest with 59.3mm recorded in March.

Met Éireann forecast that the weather will remain dry and settled into next week with above average daytime temperatures, especially in the west.
