The Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre
A Mayo aquarium has announced the launch of 'Sensory Sundays', an innovative and inclusive programme aimed at supporting children with additional needs across Ireland.
Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre launched Sensory Sundays which will kick off on Sunday, March 2, and will be held every Sunday in the centre. The first two slots of 10am and 10.45am on Sundays will be free for children and adults with additional needs, providing a nurturing environment where children can explore, play, and engage with a variety of sensory experiences.
Sensory Sundays is specifically designed to cater to the unique needs of children with additional needs. Each week, Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre located in Crumpaun, Keel will offer a range of interactive sensory experiences centred around the fish and aquarium exhibits. These activities have been shown to enhance sensory processing, promote self-regulation, and foster social interaction among participants, ultimately contributing to their overall development.
“We are committed to ensuring that every child in Ireland has the opportunity to thrive in an environment tailored to their individual needs,” says Elaine Vesey, Manager of Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre.
“Sensory Sundays will provide a supportive space where children can explore their senses, build confidence, and connect with other families facing similar challenges.”
The aquarists and tour guides have great experience in supporting children with additional needs, and will help guide each session, ensuring a positive and enriching experience for every child. This tailored approach allows participants to engage at their own pace, creating a welcoming atmosphere that nurtures personal growth and social connection.
In addition to the sensory activities, Sensory Sundays will also serve as a platform for parents and guardians to meet, share experiences, and build a supportive community. Families from across Ireland are invited to join in this exciting new programme and take part in a journey of discovery and empowerment.
