Cliona Darcy, a boxing star with strong Mayo lineage will fight for Ireland this week in Belfast.
There will be big Mayo boxing interest in Belfast this week when Ireland take on Hungary, England and an Ulster selection in an U-23 round-robin event at the Girdwood Community Hub.
Ballyhaunis fighter Carlagh Peake has been selected for the event and the World silver medalist will take to the ring against Hungary's Petra Mezei at 50kg on Thursday. Peake is one of Ireland's most exciting prospects and this week's tournament will be used as preparations for the upcoming European Championships in Hungary in November.
Another young woman with strong Mayo lineage will also box for Ireland in Belfast this week. Cliona Darcy from the Tobar Pheadair club in Galway is one of Ireland's brightest prospects and already has European and World titles to her name.
In November 2022, Cliona became the first Irish woman to win a World Youth Championship heavyweight title when she defeated all-comers at the finals in Spain. The talented fighter has strong Mayo links. Her grandfather, Tom Murray is a native of Cogaula, just outside Westport and her grand-uncle Joe Murray still resides in the village.
Darcy has tasted victory at European and World level and the young woman with the Cogaula heritage is now busily preparing for this week's event in Belfast alongside Peake and the rest of the Irish team.
