The election of Micheál Martin as Taoiseach will not proceed this Wednesday following the adjournment of the Dáil amid chaotic in the chamber.
The Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy made the decision to halt proceedings shortly after 4.30pm after TDs on the opposition benches rose to their feet following her decision to begin the process of nominating a Taoiseach.
The 34th Dáil was suspended on two separate occasions earlier in the day due to a row which erupted over opposition speaking rights.
The dispute centres on a move by independent politicians to form a “technical group”, which would give them speaking rights from the opposition benches.
There has been pushback from opposition parties to allow members of the Independent Regional Group, who agreed to support the Government, to be given these rights.
Dáil rules state that a number of TDs can come together to get similar speaking rights and Dail time to those afforded to political parties.

With the Dáil now adjourned until Thursday morning, it's not clear when the nomination of a Taoiseach will now take place and when the new Cabinet will be announced.
It's understood that opposition leaders and their party whips will meet later this Thursday while the leaders of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are expected to hold a briefing for reporters.
As of now, the Dáil is scheduled to resume at 9am on Thursday.
