West Mayo rugby team appoint new head coach

Former Connacht Coach of the Year David Newman brings extensive playing and coaching experience to Castlebar Rugby Club's senior men's team.
Castlebar Rugby Club has appointed David Newman as head coach of the club's senior men's team for the upcoming season.
David began his rugby career with Chester RFC, progressing through the club's youth system before representing Cheshire at various age grades. He also earned representative honours with the North of England at Under-17 and Under-18 level.
He later played for Builth Wells RTC in the Welsh League, where he also represented Mid Wales. After moving to Ireland in 2000, David joined Ballina RFC, enjoying several seasons in both the All-Ireland League (AIL) and the Connacht J1A League.
During that time, he also spent two seasons playing dual-status rugby with Connemara All Blacks and represented the Connacht Juniors over a number of years.
David's coaching career began at Ballina RFC, where he worked closely with youth coaches and club management to develop clear pathways for player progression. His commitment to player development was recognised in 2019 when he was named Connacht Coach of the Year.
Speaking during Castlebar's senior squad pre-season training session at Cloondeash last Thursday, David said he is excited about the opportunity ahead.
“This is a very exciting role for me as I see huge potential in the Castlebar players, and I look forward to working with them and the club's committee to ensure that ability is unlocked.”
Welcoming the appointment, Castlebar Rugby Club's Director of Rugby, Mark Staunton, said:
“David's playing background, coaching experience and passion for player development made him the outstanding candidate for the position of head coach.”
Club President Mairéad Bradley also welcomed David to Cloondeash, highlighting his ability to develop players.
“One of David's greatest strengths as a coach is player development, particularly helping younger players understand their roles within a team structure that allows them to reach their full potential. It is a pleasure to welcome David to Castlebar, where he will have the full support of everyone at the club.”
