Ballinrobe 0-17

In Castlebar

On a cool October afternoon in the home of Mayo football, the men from Ballindine and Irishtown created a fresh historic chapter in their club’s history as Mark Concannon’s men sealed a famous day securing the Sweeney Cup for the first time since 2011.

On the day, the men in black and red were the superior side as they were more clinical in front of goal than their South Mayo neighbours. Davitts kicked five two pointers across the hour as team captain Niall Treacy led the charge while the energetic attacker kicked 0-8 on the day.

At the break, Davitts who came into the game as slight underdogs led by six as they went in at the break leading 0-12 to 0-6. Ballinrobe struggled in the opening half as they only managed to kick 0-2 from open play.

Ballinrobe were hoping for a good start in the second half but it was Davitts who got that as Ciaran Treacy, Fenton Kelly and the inspirational Jack Melvin all found the target.

Needing to settle, Ballinrobe went in search of important scores and goalkeeper Luke Jennings landed them as the shotstopper added two from placed ball efforts while he also booted over a fine two point free.

However, Davitts found extra and kicked on yet again through the magnificent Melvin and the terrific Treacy brothers. Mayo coach and four time All-Star Colm Boyle entered the heat of the battle with 20 to go and the experienced veteran added real composure while he also got on the score sheet.

Late on, Cian O’Connell had the margin down to five points but that was as good as it got for the Robesiders as Davitts finished strong to run out impressive winners as the Sweeney Cup will reside along the border for the months ahead.

A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
