Mayo County Council agree to hold civic reception for Andy Moran's All-Ireland champions on September 25

Mayo councillors have agreed to afford the All-Ireland senior football champions with a civic reception which will take place later this month.

Mayo County Council passed a motion at Monday's monthly meeting to honour Andy Moran's men for winning the All-Ireland Senior Football Final for the first time in 75 years.

Cathaoirleach of the county council, Cllr John Caulfield proposed the civic reception for the team to honour the outstanding achievement and the joy it has brought to the county.

“It was an outstanding achievement by the Mayo team and I was delighted to be part of the homecoming to publicly congratulate the team. It was suggested that Mayo County Council look forward to affording a civic reception for the team at the earliest opportunity," he said, adding that the Mayo County Board had been in touch regarding possible dates for a civic reception.

The meeting heard that some of the Mayo team may be soon travelling to America to meet the diaspora and it was agreed to hold the civic reception on Friday, September 25.

Fianna Fáil councillor Damien Ryan formally seconded the proposal for a civic reception and congratulated the team on winning the All-Ireland. He said that all the tributes to the team should be paid at the civic reception.

Martina Hughes, the Meetings Administrator with Mayo County Council said the final details of the civic reception will be confirmed in the coming days.

Castlebar councillor Donna Sheridan added it was important that Mayo County Council staff who worked on the day of the All-Ireland Final to facilitate the screening of the game at the Mall in Castlebar are also thanked.

In the days following the final victory, members of Westport/Belmullet Municipal District proposed that they hold a civic reception for the team in Westport Town Hall. Cathaoirleach of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Mulroy had requested that the Westport civic reception be held as soon as possible but the reception has yet to take place with no date confirmed.
