‘Mayo is back’ an Australian news broadcaster has announced

NEWS of Mayo’s win has been broadcast to millions by one of Australia’s largest TV News broadcasters, 7 News Sydney.

The news segment announced: “County Mayo has won the Gaelic Football Championship, breaking a 75-year losing streak that locals attributed to a curse imposed by a catholic priest in 1951.”

The segment said “we don’t cover a lot of Irish sports”, but “fans live for moments like this.”

Explaining the origins of the curse, journalist Hugh Whitfeld, reporting from Dublin said: "Legend goes the Mayo team were cursed.”

“The 1951 team disrupted a funeral procession on their journey home. The priest damned them. He said Mayo would never win another title as long as you all shall live. The last player from that squad died in 2023. With that, Mayo is back.”

The news broadcaster attracts over a million viewers a night in Australia.

Across down under, Irish diaspora and GAA fans have tuned in to the match to connect with their people back home.
