Gaelforce West celebrates 20 years in Mayo with milestone adventure race event
A community notice was issued ahead of June 13 event as organisers warn of temporary traffic delays
Gaelforce West will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Saturday, June 13, 2026, with a milestone event marking two decades of adventure racing in Mayo and the wider West.
First held in 2006, Gaelforce West has become recognised as Ireland’s original adventure race, attracting competitors from across the country and beyond to test themselves against the rugged landscapes of Connemara and Mayo.
This year’s event will once again feature the iconic 68km triple-discipline route, combining endurance and outdoor adventure across land and water before finishing in Westport.
To mark the special anniversary, organisers at Gaelforce Events are also introducing Gaelforce Westport, a one-off 34km sprint event featuring running and cycling designed to celebrate the milestone year.
As the event takes place on public roads and along sections of the route, organisers have advised that temporary traffic delays may occur throughout the day.
Motorists and road users travelling in affected areas are being asked to exercise caution, follow directions from event marshals and allow extra travel time where necessary.
Gaelforce Events thanked local communities, residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience and support over the past two decades, acknowledging the important role they play in the success of the event.
The annual race has become a major fixture on the outdoor sporting calendar, showcasing the scenery and adventure tourism potential of the west of Ireland while bringing competitors and visitors into local communities.
Further information on routes, timings and event details is available through the Gaelforce Events website.
