Crossmolina students gain hands-on forestry experience through national initiative

Second-year students at St Tiernan’s College in Crossmolina have celebrated the completion of Coillte’s World of Work Programme 2026 at a special event held at the school, marking another successful year of participation in the initiative.

The programme, delivered in partnership with Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI), gives students practical insight into careers in forestry, sustainability and environmental management through hands-on learning and real-world experiences.

Students from St Tiernan’s College joined peers from schools across Mayo, Galway, and Kilkenny and as part of this year’s programme, with a total of 128 students participating nationwide.

As part of the initiative, students visited a Coillte forest alongside a professional forester to gain first-hand experience of the forestry sector and learn more about the role forests play in supporting climate, biodiversity, timber production and local communities.

Colm O’Dwyer, Regional Manager at Coillte, said the programme has been rewarding for both students and organisers.

“We are delighted to celebrate three years of partnership with St Tiernan’s College. It has been incredibly rewarding to see students engage so positively, gaining practical insights into the role forestry plays in their local area,” he said. “We hope this experience inspires students to consider the diverse and rewarding careers available within the forestry sector.”

Lorraine McHale, Deputy Principal at St Tiernan’s College, said students had embraced the experience.

“The programme gives students a valuable opportunity to learn beyond the classroom in a way that is engaging, interactive and activity based. It has increased students’ knowledge of forestry and sustainability in a fun and collaborative environment,” she said.

Mel Flynn, Education Programmes Manager with Business in the Community Ireland, said the programme helps broaden students’ perspectives by connecting them with workplace experiences and potential career opportunities.
