Tertulia Bookshop is helping lead the Global Book Crawl, placing Mayo at the heart of a worldwide celebration of independent bookshops.

Mayo bookshops are once again playing a role in the global celebration of independent bookstores, as the Global Book Crawl returns from April 20 to 26.

The initiative, which involves 67 independent bookshops and libraries across Ireland, will run simultaneously in 20 countries, linking literary communities from Mayo to cities such as New York, Sydney and Stockholm.

At the centre of the Irish effort is Westport Quay’s Tertulia Bookshop, one of the founding bookshops behind the international campaign. The idea was developed in collaboration with bookshops in Spain and the United States, highlighting the power of independent retailers working together.

During the week-long event, participating bookshops will distribute a “Global Book Crawl Passport”, inviting readers to visit multiple stores, collect stamps, discover new titles and avail of special offers.

Organisers say the initiative is designed not only to promote reading but also to strengthen local communities and support independent businesses.

Bríd Conroy of Tertulia Bookshop said the growth of the event has been remarkable.

“This is our second Global Book Crawl. Last year we had 22 bookshops, this year we are up to 67 participants,” she said. “We know the importance of bookshops as community and cultural spaces.”

Across Ireland, thousands of passports will be distributed, with participants who complete their crawl entered into a prize draw on May 6.

From its origins in Westport, the Global Book Crawl has grown into an international movement celebrating independent book culture, encouraging people to shop local while connecting with readers around the world.
