Proposed route options for the Cong Relief Road are now open for public consultation in Cong.

A new phase of public consultation has been launched for the proposed Cong Relief Road, a key infrastructure project aimed at addressing traffic congestion in Cong, Mayo.

Mayo County Council has announced a public information campaign as part of Phase 2 of the project, which focuses on selecting preferred route options for the planned road.

As part of the consultation process, three emerging route options are being presented to the public, with detailed information made available online from Thursday, April 2, until Friday, April 17.

An in-person meeting will take place on Thursday, April 9, from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Cong Community Centre (Gortaroe). Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions to Mayo County Council staff and to consultants for the proposed scheme, O'Connor, Sutton, and Cronin.

Local residents, businesses and stakeholders are being encouraged to review the proposals and provide feedback, which will help shape the final route selection.

The relief road is intended to ease traffic pressure within Cong village, a popular tourist destination that experiences significant congestion, particularly during peak seasons. The wider study area for the project spans both Mayo and Galway.

According to the local authority, the consultation aims to gather local knowledge and insights to inform the next stage of planning and ensure the preferred option reflects community needs.

The project forms part of broader efforts to improve transport infrastructure across Mayo, supporting safer travel, reduced congestion and enhanced accessibility in the region.
