Concerns raised over lack of late-night transport options in Mayo town

A local councillor has raised concerns about the lack of late-night transport options in Westport, with calls for improved taxi and hackney services to ensure people can travel home safely.

Lack of late-night transport options in Mayo town

Concerns have been raised about the lack of late-night transport options for people visiting and socialising in Westport

Mayo County councillor Brendan Mulroy (Fianna Fáil) raised the issue at this week’s monthly meeting of the Westport–Belmullet Municipal District, highlighting growing demand in the popular tourist town, particularly at night.

Speaking about the issue, Cllr Mulroy said discussions have already begun with key stakeholders to explore possible solutions.

“Basically, we’re talking to An Garda Síochána, we’ve started talking to hackney people and of course taxi services,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is get a conversation going.”

He said the aim is to ensure transport is available not just within the town, but also to serve surrounding rural areas late at night.

“When someone is trying to get a taxi from Westport out to the rural areas, the taxis would be there to bring them,” he said. “It’s about supply and demand.”

Cllr Mulroy pointed to Westport’s continued growth as a tourism and hospitality destination, saying transport services need to keep pace with development.

“Westport is a progressive town,” he said. “We have Westport House coming on board with a new development, a lot of hotels operating across the town, and we have the Westport–Dublin train line bringing more people into Westport.”

“It needs to be serviced correctly at night at this point,” he said, referring to the role of taxis, hackneys and future transport options.

Cllr Mulroy said discussions are also looking ahead to how transport services may evolve.

“We’re looking at the hackney, taxi and Uber business into the future,” he said. “That’s what we’re trying to get together — to see if we can move forward with it.”

At present, there are no designated taxi ranks in Westport, and the councillor is proposing that Mayo County Council, An Garda Síochána and local transport operators come together to address the issue.
