Thirteen employees across two EuroGiant stores in Westport and Ballina in County Mayo are among 640 staff nationwide who have lost their jobs after the discount retail chain permanetly closed its stores in the last two weeks.

The shop in Westport ceased trading on Friday, March 20, while the store in Ballina announced over the weekend that it was permanently closed. 

The Mayo News understands that the Westport branch in Westpoint Shopping Centre was one of the most profitable shops in the 77 company-owned stores across more than 20 counties.

Eurogiant first opened in Ballina on Pearse Street on St Patrick's Day in 2004, before moving to Dillon Terrace in April 2022.  

There were many well wishers who posted underneath the post announcing the permanent closure of Eurogiant. 

The Irish-owned business, which had traded for over three decades, cited rising costs and increased competition as the primary factors behind its collapse. 

A company spokesperson in February confirmed that escalating rent and operating expenses, combined with fierce competition in the retail sector, had rendered the business "no longer viable in its current form."
