More than 250 delegates from across Europe attended the annual conference of Ireland’s Association for Adventure Tourism (IAAT) in Westport, Co Mayo, a three-day event showcasing developments and opportunities within the adventure tourism sector.
The conference included a B2B marketplace featuring Irish and international buyers, an exhibition of Mayo tourism businesses with interactive displays and live entertainment, and a series of expert-led breakout sessions. Delegates also participated in a programme of local adventure activities, ranging from horse riding and stand-up paddleboarding to a Greenway cycle, a pilgrim walk, a Westport wolfhound experience, and an island trip in Clew Bay.
A full day of plenary sessions brought together industry leaders and guest speakers, including Minister of State Alan Dillon, Tourism Ireland CEO Alice Mansergh, Fáilte Ireland Director of Regional Development Paul Keeley, Irish Tourism Industry Confederation CEO Eoghan O'Mara Walsh, explorer Saki Daorana, musician and content creator Garron Noone, author and advocate Geraldine Lavelle, Leave No Trace Ireland CEO Maura Kiely, Ireland West Airport marketing director Donal Healy, and Irish Independent travel editor Pól Ó Conghaile.
Joanne Grehan, Director of Services at Mayo County Council, said the event highlighted the ambition and resilience of Ireland’s adventure tourism sector, noting that Mayo’s landscapes and communities “play a central role in shaping memorable visitor experiences.”
IAAT CEO Brendan Kenny described the event as the organisation’s largest conference to date. He thanked Mayo County Council and the Westport community for their support and said the association looks forward to continued collaboration to strengthen Mayo’s and Ireland’s position in global adventure tourism.
