Funeral of Mayo motorcycle victim to take place in Newport on Saturday

The funeral of a Mayo motorcyclist who lost his life following a two-vehicle traffic collision on Sunday afternoon will take place in his native Newport on Saturday.

Michael Mulchrone, known as Mick of Lakeview, Knockglass, Newport died in Mayo University Hospital on Tuesday, August 19, two days after he was involved in a traffic collision on the Castlebar Road outside Newport.

Mr Mulchrone, who was aged in his 50s and a married father of two children, was on a motorcycle which was involved in a collision with a car at approximately 4.50pm on Sunday afternoon.

He was rushed to Mayo University Hospital where he remained in a critical condition before passing away on Tuesday, August 19.

The funeral details for Mr Mulchrone have been released and he will repose at St Dominick’s Funeral Home, Newport on Friday, August 22 from 5pm until 7.30pm.

His funeral Mass will take place in St Patrick’s Church, Newport at 11am, with burial afterwards in Ballintubber Abbey Cemetery.

Mr Mulchrone is survived by his wife, Margaret, nee Moran; son, Keith and daughter, Amy; sisters, Ann, Mary, Teresa, Catherine, Margaret; brothers, Frank, Patrick and Martin; nephews and nieces, cousins, extended family, neighbours and his wide circle friends.

Gardaí in Westport who are investigating the collision are continuing to appeal for witnesses. Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area of Castlebar Road, Newport, between 4pm and 5pm on Sunday, August 17, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

A man, aged in his 60s was later arrested in connection with the investigation and subsequently released without charge pending further investigations.
